Description
The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a statement of the Church’s faith and doctrine drawn from Scripture, Apostolic Tradition and the Magisterium, promulgated by Pope John Paul II in the apostolic constitution Fidei Depositum of 11 October 1992, which calls it a sure norm for teaching the faith. It was prepared over six years after the 1985 Extraordinary Synod of Bishops asked for a reference text covering Catholic doctrine on faith and morals. Its four parts cover the Profession of Faith (the Creed), the Celebration of the Christian Mystery (the sacraments), Life in Christ (the Ten Commandments) and Christian Prayer (the Our Father); it is intended for pastors and the faithful, as a guide for local catechisms, and for anyone who wants to know what the Catholic Church believes.
