Description
By Pope John Paul II
Encyclical letter of Pope John Paul II dated 14 September 1998 and addressed to the bishops of the Catholic Church. It opens with the image of faith and reason as two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth, and describes the Church’s service to humanity’s search for truth as a diakonia of the truth. It praises philosophy as a noble task while warning that modern thought has become sceptical and relativistic, and it aims to restore confidence in the human capacity to know the truth.
