Taking its title from St Francis of Assisi’s canticle, it describes the earth as a sister and mother who cries out because of human exploitation, and places itself in a line of papal concern for the environment from John XXIII to Benedict XVI. It calls for a change of human attitudes rather than technology alone, presents an integral ecology that joins care for nature, justice for the poor and inner peace, and appeals for a new universal solidarity and global dialogue about the future of the planet.
